Margery Silvia

Margery Ellen Silvia, 93, of Middletown, Rhode Island, died on August 20, 2025. She was the wife of the late Manuel Silvia. Born in Wickford, RI on June 22, 1932, She was the daughter of the late Herman and Lois (Smith) Berthold. She grew up on Broadway in Newport, and soon was working at the former Frasch’s Bakery, where she met one of the delivery drivers, Manuel. He went off to serve in the Air force and Margery waited for his return, and they soon married.

Margery was a woman of faith, and her life was centered around her church. At First Presbyterian Church, she was active in many facets of the community. She participated in and often led the women’s bible study group for over 30 years. She was also active in the quilting and sewing groups, the youth group, and worked for many years at the church as the sexton.

At home she enjoyed caring for her garden, helping as a den mother to the Cub Scouts, and making many many of quilts over the years.

Margery is survived by her two sons, Paul Silvia and his wife Marianne Menas of Newport and Robert Silvia and is wife Sally Silva of Durham, NC, nine beloved grandchildren and ten Great-Grandchildren, and a dear friend Deidra Ricci whom she always considered as a daughter.

Margery is preceded in death by her siblings, George Berthold, Barbara Boscia, Lois Berthold, Lee Barker, Helen Fitzgerald, and Clara Tasca.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, Rhode Island. Funeral Service will be on August 28, 2025 at 11:00 AM in First Presbyterian Church, 4 Everett St, Newport.
