Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Christine Baranski will appear at The Elms on Aug. 7 for a special edition of the annual John G. Winslow Lecture, where she’ll discuss HBO’s “The Gilded Age” and her career.
Baranski stars as Agnes van Rhijn in the critically acclaimed period drama, which HBO announced Monday will return for a fourth season. The series has been filmed partly at seven Newport Mansions, including The Elms.
Additional tickets for the event became available Tuesday and can be purchased at NewportMansions.org/Events.
The conversation will be moderated by Jared Bowen, Emmy Award-winning executive arts editor and host of GBH’s “The Culture Show,” a daily radio program and podcast based in Boston.
“We are honored that Christine will be joining us for what will surely be one of the highlights of the summer here in Newport,” said Trudy Coxe, CEO of the Preservation Society of Newport County. “Like so many other fans of ‘The Gilded Age,’ I marvel at Christine’s talent each week as she animates the character of Agnes van Rhijn.”
Baranski earned an Emmy nomination for her current role in “The Gilded Age.” Season 3, which began June 22, has recorded the show’s highest ratings since its debut.
The Juilliard School graduate has won two Tony Awards — for “The Real Thing” and “Rumors” — along with Emmy, Screen Actors Guild, Drama Desk and American Comedy awards. She received an Emmy for her role in “Cybill” and earned six Emmy nominations for playing Diane Lockhart in “The Good Wife” and its spinoff “The Good Fight.”
Her film credits include “The Birdcage,” “Chicago,” “Mamma Mia!” and “Into the Woods.” She recently completed season 2 of Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers.”
The Preservation Society of Newport County is a nonprofit organization that operates 11 historic properties, seven of them National Historic Landmarks, spanning more than 250 years of American architectural and social development.
