Providence Salutes the Season During “Downtown Celebrates Summer,” a Weekend of Food, Fun and Festivities

Providence is set to come alive this weekend with the debut of “Downtown Celebrates Summer,” a two-day festival packed with entertainment, dining, and cultural experiences throughout the capital city.

The festivities kick off Saturday, July 19, marking the final day of Providence Restaurant Weeks, where more than 70 local restaurants will offer special menus and prix fixe deals. Food enthusiasts can also embark on the Downcity Providence Food Tour, a guided culinary journey through the city’s vibrant arts district starting at noon for $79.

Cultural attractions will be in full swing, with the RISD Museum opening its new exhibition “Liz Collins: Motherlode,” celebrating the work of the New York-based artist known for bold abstract patterns. The museum will offer free admission on Sunday. Meanwhile, history buffs can explore the elaborately decorated Victorian rooms of Lippitt House Museum through guided tours, or take evening ghost tours through Providence’s haunted East Side.

The weekend coincides with FringePVD Fest, New England’s largest fringe festival, featuring more than 300 performing artists from across the country. The full festival runs July 13-26, with weekend highlights including community dance classes, performances, and busking throughout multiple downtown locations.

Sunday, July 20, brings the Downtown Park Wayfinding Kickoff, a free celebration along the Providence Riverfront from noon to 7 p.m. The event will unveil 200 new banners reflecting the city’s spirit and creativity, featuring performances, public art, and interactive activities across Waterplace Park, Market Square, and District Park.

Families can enjoy free kayak rentals along the Providence and Woonasquatucket Rivers, interactive city-building activities, and giant bubble demonstrations. Cultural performances throughout the day include flamenco dance workshops, traditional Chinese lion dancing, Laotian dance, and free bachata classes.

The weekend will also feature the Puerto Rican Bay Fest, Rhode Island’s largest celebration of Puerto Rican culture, running from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at India Point Park with live music, food, and family activities.

For those seeking unique experiences, authentic Venetian gondola rides will be available along the Providence Riverwalk, while evening twilight river cruises offer complimentary wine from local Gooseneck Vineyards.

The Providence Flea returns to District Park on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring more than 75 local vendors selling vintage items, artisan goods, and local food, with free admission and parking.

All events are designed to showcase Providence’s diverse cultural landscape and growing reputation as a destination for food, arts, and entertainment. More information about individual events and ticketing can be found at GoProvidence.com.
