Child & Family Services of Newport County, one of Rhode Island’s oldest and most comprehensive human service organizations, has announced the appointment of Susan Jacobsen, MA, LMHC, as its new President and Chief Executive Officer.

Ms. Jacobsen brings two decades of leadership in behavioral health, nonprofit management, philanthropy, and health equity initiatives across Rhode Island. Her career includes roles such as Senior Director of Health Equity Initiatives at Thundermist Health Center and Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Rhode Island.

“Susan’s deep understanding of Rhode Island’s health and human services landscape and her commitment to equity and community engagement make her the ideal leader to guide Child & Family into its next chapter,” said Jess Kennedy, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Her experience aligns seamlessly with our mission to strengthen individuals, families, and the communities in which they live by identifying needs and utilizing best practices.”

Ms. Jacobsen succeeds Marty Sinnott, who is retiring after serving as President & CEO since 2014. During his tenure, Mr. Sinnott led the agency through transformational periods of growth and modernization, including expansion of supportive housing programs, increased behavioral health capacity, and navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board and staff are deeply grateful for his years of dedicated leadership and impact on the organization.

Founded in 1866, Child & Family serves over 2,000 individuals annually through programs including foster care, early childhood education, family preservation, supportive housing, and elder services. The organization operates community centers in Middletown and Providence and is recognized as the largest and most comprehensive human services provider in Newport County.

“I’m honored to join Child & Family and build on its legacy of service,” said Ms. Jacobsen. “For over 150 years, Child & Family has met Rhode Islanders’ evolving needs with compassion, integrity, and innovation. I am excited to work with our dedicated staff, board, and community partners to advance the mission and ensure access to care that supports families, strengthens communities, and helps every person thrive.”
