Three Newport residents are facing charges related to an assault on two local police officers that happened on April 29.
Keyshla Cruz Martinez, 33, Jose Cruz Ortiz, 40, and Mayra Custodio, 27, were arrested on April 30. They’re each charged with simple assault, obstructing officers, and disorderly conduct.
The arrests are connected to an incident at the Festival Field Housing Development. Police responded to a domestic violence call there at 9:12 p.m. on April 29.
When officers arrived, they identified Angel Cruz Martinez, 28, as the suspect in the domestic violence case. As they tried to arrest him, Martinez allegedly fought back, hitting and pushing the officers.
During the scuffle, several bystanders reportedly joined in, attacking the officers. More police units arrived to help control the situation.
The two officers who were attacked received treatment for minor injuries at Newport Hospital and were released.
Angel Cruz Martinez is facing charges of domestic simple assault, domestic disorderly conduct, vandalism, and larceny. He’s also charged with simple assault and resisting arrest.
Three other people were initially arrested: Jose Carreras, 39, of Newport; Calvin Febles, 28, of Middletown; and Jetsenia Luna Schmidt, 37, of Newport. They’re facing various charges including assaulting a police officer, simple assault, disorderly conduct, and obstructing an officer.
Newport Police detectives are still investigating the incident and expect to make more arrests.
All suspects were set to be arraigned in Newport District Court on April 30.
