🚨 You need to know

Newport City Council will consider a resolution on Wednesday (May 28) to support the design and construction planning of a Middle Passage Port Marker Memorial. The proposal, introduced by Council Chair Charles M. Holder and four other councilors, aims to commemorate Newport’s role in the transatlantic slave trade.

The proposed memorial site is a state-owned traffic island at the intersection of America’s Cup Avenue, Thames Street, and Church Street. The resolution acknowledges Newport’s central role in the slave trade and supports public commemoration of this legacy.

The Newport Middle Passage Port Marker Project (NMPPMP), has been collaborating with city staff and community groups to identify suitable sites for the memorial. The Tree and Open Space Commission has already expressed support for the chosen location.

The resolution outlines the approval process, which includes review and recommendations from the Tree and Open Space Commission and the Public Sculpture Commission. A second Council resolution and coordination with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation will also be required.

If passed, the resolution will allow preliminary staff engagement with RIDOT on behalf of the project. In the resolution, the City Council recognizes the NMPPMP’s efforts to honor those who endured the slave trade and promote public understanding and dialogue as part of Newport’s cultural and civic life.
