Middletown is set to celebrate the start of construction on its new Middle High School on June 9.

The groundbreaking ceremony starts at 10 a.m. near the construction site by Gaudet Middle School. If it rains, the event will move to June 11.

This 211,000-square-foot school, opening for the 2027-2028 year, will be Rhode Island’s first combined middle-high school.

Voters gave the project the green light in November 2023.

The current high school will become a learning center for grades 2-5, while Forest Avenue School will focus on pre-K through first grade.

Construction is about to begin, typically running weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with some Saturday work. Officials promise it won’t disrupt normal activities at Gaudet Middle School and Gaudet Learning Academy.

The project team includes Colliers Project Leaders (Providence) as project manager, Gilbane (Providence) as construction manager, and HMFH (Cambridge, Massachusetts) working with DBVW Architects (Providence) as project architects.
