This Friday, May 2nd, beginning at 7:30 am, celebrate Bike Month and the Launch of the DRIVE LESS RI APP with a refreshing breakfast and lots of fun giveaways! At 9:00 am, Bike Newport will lead the first group ride on the new shared-use path!
As yet unnamed, the community recently voted to name the path, and all future island segments, “The Aquidneck Island Greenway.” RIDOT has submitted the name to the US Department of Transportation for approval.
This free event will be held at the Newport Park and Ride to kick off a series of bike events taking place over the month of May. Information about the event and links to more about BIKE MONTH can be found here: https://bikenewportri.org/bike-month-launch/
The DRIVE LESS RI APP rewards participants for driving less. Participants will earn discounts from retailers and monthly gift card drawings. Record your bus, bike, train, carpool, vanpool and walking trips to track gallons of gas saved, emissions prevented, and calories burned, and connect with carpools and bike riders throughout the state.
Chris Burich of Bike Newport is already using the DRIVE LESS RI APP. “By simply recording my commute to work each day on my bike, I earn points that can be used to unlock discounts at restaurants, businesses, experiences, and shopping destinations across Rhode Island!”
Zahra Hijazi loves the new bike path, “I feel safe riding on the bike path – I don’t have to worry about cars!”
Peter Michaud, of RIPTA Commuter Resources, invites all to participate, “It’s about buses, bicycles, and much more; it’s about building a stronger, more inclusive community, getting there while driving less – come ride with us!”
