Save The Bay this week opened registration for its annual Save The Bay Swim, an annual event that challenges skilled swimmers to tackle two miles of open water.
The nonprofit organization’s flagship fundraiser, taking place this year on Saturday, July 19, starts at the Naval War College in Newport and finishes in Jamestown’s Potter Cove.
“Since its inception in 1977, The Swim has been a community event that not only raises funds for Save The Bay’s mission to protect and improve Narragansett Bay, but also demonstrates the role we can collectively play to ensure our greatest natural treasure stays healthy for future generations” said Maureen Fogarty, Director of Operations for Save The Bay.
As one of the most storied open-water events in the country, The Swim attracts hundreds of swimmers from across the country, as well as more than a hundred local volunteers, to the only event that invites swimmers to cross Narragansett Bay’s East Passage. The event is Save The Bay’s largest annual fundraiser, providing critical support to the organization’s educational programs, advocacy and habitat restoration efforts.

“I love the ocean, always have” said Cheryl Hatch, a 10-year swimmer from Middletown. “I love The Swim and everything it stands for. It’s not a race for me. It’s an act of service and a chance to gather with good friends for a good cause. Our team #withkeith, now swims in honor and memory of our beloved friend Keith Ryan, who participated in his last swim in 2019. During The Swim each year, I take the time to marvel at the sky, the water, the beauty, and remember what a once-a-year gift we have to cross the Bay.”

The registration fee for qualifying Swim participants is $50, with a $400 fundraising minimum. The event also offers options for a virtual Swim and other athletic challenges that can be completed remotely. Virtual and remote challenges require a $25 registration fee and a $200 fundraising minimum.
Local businesses generously sponsor the event, and thousands of individuals donate funds to swimmers, supporting fundraising efforts.
