Newport Police Department

A police operation targeting crack cocaine distribution in Newport has resulted in the arrest of two Massachusetts men on drug charges.

Kolby McCoy, 25, and Jacques Jeanty, 21, both from New Bedford, Mass., were taken into custody on March 20 following an investigation by Newport’s Vice and Narcotics Unit.

Police had their eye on McCoy and got a warrant to search his car. They set up a stakeout at a 7-Eleven on Memorial Boulevard after getting a tip that McCoy would be there to sell crack cocaine.

Around 12:45 p.m., McCoy showed up. When police moved in, he tried to make a run for it, hitting two parked cars before his vehicle got stuck on a pile of wood.

McCoy then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly caught. Jeanty, who was riding with McCoy, was arrested without any trouble.

The charges against McCoy include possession with intent to deliver Schedule I/II substances, controlled substance conspiracy, reckless driving, and obstructing an officer. Jeanty faces two counts of possession with intent to deliver Schedule I/II substances and controlled substance conspiracy.

Both men spent the night at the Newport Police Station and are set to appear in Newport District Court on March 21 for arraignment.

Despite one of the parked cars being occupied during the collision, no injuries were reported in the incident.
