The Seamen’s Church Institute of Newport is accepting applications for its yearly $500 maritime scholarship.
Students in Newport County interested in maritime careers or studies can apply for the 2025 Leonard W. & Katherine C. Hayward Maritime Memorial Scholarship. You can pick up an application at the institute’s office at 18 Market Square, Newport, or email tara@seamensnewport.org to request one. The application deadline is May 1, 2025.
The scholarship honors World War II veteran “Bill” Hayward, who served in both the Atlantic and Pacific. After the war, Hayward became vice president of Newport Hospital and volunteered as a consultant for various charities.
From 1994 to 1997, Bill Hayward led the Seamen’s Church Institute as president. He helped shape its mission to provide a safe haven and maritime education opportunities.
His wife, Katherine “Kitty” Hayward, also volunteered and supported the institute.
The Haywards’ leadership and community contributions are recognized through this scholarship, established in 1998.
