Newport Restaurant Group (NRG) is making waves with a big change at the top. The company has promoted Executive Vice President Mick Lamond to president and CEO, taking over from Paul O’Reilly.

O’Reilly isn’t leaving the company entirely. He’s stepping into a special advisor role, where he’ll focus on helping NRG grow strategically. This shift is part of a carefully planned succession that’s been in the works for years.

In his new role, Lamond will be at the helm of NRG’s lineup of 17 unique restaurants and hospitality venues spread across 21 locations in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Lamond is pumped about his new position. “I am excited to take on the role of CEO at Newport Restaurant Group, and have been fortunate to participate in and experience its growth and success over the last 20 years,” says Lamond. “Working closely for so many years alongside Paul O’Reilly in a financial and operations role has allowed me to direct its evolution and truly embrace the vision that Paul and of the board share. I look forward to continued growth and success. My focus this year remains on elevating the NRG experience for our guests and employee owners.”

Lamond’s history with NRG goes back to 2005 when he joined as CFO. He’s been managing all things financial, including the company’s employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), which owns 100% of NRG.

O’Reilly has full faith in Lamond’s abilities. “As we move forward with this anticipated transition, I am confident that Mick possesses the necessary leadership, vision, and financial acumen to drive the company forward in a thoughtful and strategic way,” he says. “I look forward to exiting the daily oversight of the company, while still playing a vital role in its growth and direction.”

A Cranston, Rhode Island local, Lamond earned his business chops at Bryant University, with a bachelor’s in business administration and a master’s in taxation. He’s also active in the ESOP community and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Employee Ownership Foundation.
