Thousands of people braved the cold waters at Easton’s Beach in Newport for the 21st Annual Polar Plunge on New Year’s Day.

The event, which started at noon, saw partly cloudy conditions, an air temperature of 48 degrees, and a water temperature of 43 degrees.

Hosted by A Wish Come True, the event raises money for children facing life-threatening illnesses. This year’s spotlight was on two “Wish Kids”: 8-year-old Lars from Jamestown and 4-year-old Indy from Coventry.

A Wish Come True’s Mary-Kate O’Leary told What’sUpNewp on Thursday, January 2, that 5,000 people attended the plunge. A Wish Come True shared on Facebook on January 2 that the event raised $73,000.

What’sUpNewp’s Justin Walker was on hand for the event and shares the following photo gallery.
