A Newport man is facing several charges after crashing a moped with an 18-month-old passenger into a parked vehicle on Sunday night.

Charles Fenwick, 31, has been charged with child endangerment, DUI resulting in serious bodily injury, reckless driving, and refusing a chemical test. The incident occurred at the intersection of Spring Street and Dixon Street.

Newport police and fire rescue teams arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m. on November 10. They found Fenwick on the ground with an apparent leg injury, while a witness was holding the toddler who had been riding on the moped.

The child was immediately taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence for treatment. Fenwick was first brought to Newport Hospital for his leg injury before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital.

As of Monday, November 11, Fenwick is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at Rhode Island Hospital. The 18-month-old is in stable condition at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Newport Police Detectives are still investigating the incident. They’ll provide more information as it becomes available.
