It was encouraging to read the recent letter to the editor suggesting that the Council-elect consider departing from the tradition of the past two decades and retain the current mayor in his position. While limiting a mayor’s tenure can be reasonable, the Charter allows the Council to pick the best possible candidate to allow our community the best possible leadership at pivotal moments like the one we are in now.
Mayor Xay has worked with the current council to establish a much-needed plan for this community and its residents, doing so with a positive tone. He has been instrumental in securing state and federal funding, and he has guided the creation of a strategic plan focused on economic development, workforce housing, resilient infrastructure, high-quality education, and well-supported city services.
Newport needs a leader with a plan who will effectively collaborate with the council. We are confident Mayor Xay is that leader.
