To The Editor:

Among the many reasons I support Representative Lauren’ Carson’s reelection is her effectiveness at advancing Newport’s interests in the legislature and her focus on the issue of resilience in the face of climate change.  One recent example of her effective advocacy and leadership was gaining the legislature’s approval to put the $98.5 Resiliency Bond Issue on the ballot this year.

Like all coastal communities, Newport faces urgent infrastructure challenges from the impacts of rising sea levels and more intense storms as the climate warms. Our most critical infrastructure, much of which is old, is at risk now.  The City Council’s commendable prioritization of the most immediate needs for funding by this bond issue is a crucial step. However, it’s just the down payment on documented needs that will ultimately cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

If we can learn anything from the unfolding tragedy of Hurricane Helene, it’s that critical infrastructure must be strengthened against the risks of our rapidly changing climate. The costs will only increase in the future if we fail to address issues like replacing the crumbing Perotti Park seawall, protecting our drinking water supply, and strengthening our emergency response infrastructure now.  I urge Newporters to vote for Lauren Carson and to approve Question #6, the Resiliency Bond Issue.

Thomas J. Gibson, Jr., Newport
