The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is urging consumers to check their freezers for certain frozen waffle products sold under a variety of brand names due to potential Listeria contamination.
The recall affects frozen waffles distributed nationwide and in Canada, according to a RIDOH news release. The waffles were sold under the following brand names:
* Always Save
* Best Choice
* Bettergoods
* Breakfast Best
* Clover Valley
* Compliments
* Essentials
* Food Lion
* Foodhold
* Giant Eagle
* Good & Gather
* Great Value

* Harris Teeter
* H-E-B
* Higher Harvest

The waffles may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the release said. Healthy individuals who are infected may experience short-term symptoms including high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The RIDOH reports no confirmed illnesses linked to the recalled products. The contamination was discovered through routine testing at the manufacturing facility.
Consumers who have purchased any of the affected products should dispose of them or return them to their place of purchase for credit.
