Dame Harle Tinney returns to Belcourt Castle Friday October 25 th. 2024
Harle H. Tinney will return to Belcourt Castle on Friday, October 25 th at 6:30 pm for an
informal presentation of her experiences with the ‘spirits’ of Belcourt Castle. David
Bettencourt, the current general manager, plans to serve refreshments for the guests,
lead a tour of the castle, explain the restorations, and elaborate on the colorful Gilded
Age history.
Memorabilia boxes of 1950s were discovered by Bettencourt in the attics of the sixty-
room mansion built by Oliver Belmont in the Gilded Age. During the 1960s, Ms. Tinney
read these documents. THE Mrs. Tinney, Ruth Emily Tinney, held community events in
1957 and 1958 including the grand Eisenhower Press Party. One recently found
document was the original program of the Tercentenary of Touro Synagogue with
Israel’s Ambassador at that time, Abba Eban.
This presentation will focus on the ‘Spirits of Belcourt Castle’. Right after the sale of the
Castle, the ‘spirits’ were reported to have been banished. Harle Tinney will recall some
of her interesting experiences that are also recorded in her 2010 book “The Ghosts of
Belcourt Castle”. There will be a Question & Answer opportunity with the audience. Ms.
Tinney will fill in some of the missing 56 years of Belcourt Castle history. Look for the
biography of the Tinney Family that Ms. Tinney is currently writing.
