Christie’s Chairman Emeritus Stephen S. Lash will give a talk on Art Deco ocean liners at the Redwood Library and Atheneum on October 24.
The lecture, “Floating Palaces of Art Deco: A History of Transatlantic Ocean Liners,” will dive into the golden age of sea travel and the ships that were moving showcases of art and design.
Lash’s presentation starts at 6 p.m. in the Harrison Room, with a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, and the public can purchase them here.
Attendees will get a virtual tour of the interiors of these impressive ocean liners from the heyday of sea travel.
Christie’s notes that these massive ships were more than just transportation – they were floating art galleries and national symbols, spreading political and artistic messages worldwide before the days of mass media.
Lash’s knowledge in this area inspired the 2017 “Ocean Liners” exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
Christie’s, which has been around since 1766, now operates in 46 countries around the globe.
