The Newport String Project kicks off its Newport County Concert Series with two performances by the resident Newport String Quartet on October 26 and 27.
At these upcoming concerts, music lovers can enjoy works by Franz Joseph Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn, Imogen Holst, and Carlos Simon.
The first show will be at 2 pm on October 26 at The Guild Hall at St. John’s Church in Newport. The following day, October 27, the quartet will perform at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Jamestown.
The Newport String Quartet features violinists Ealaín McMullin and Kenneth Trotter, violist Florrie Marshall, and cellist Chelsea Bernstein. Their program blends classical masterpieces with contemporary compositions.
The setlist includes Haydn’s String Quartet op. 17 no. 4 in C minor and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in F minor, op. 80.
Rounding out the program, the quartet performs Imogen Holst’s Phantasy Quartet and Carlos Simon’s “Warmth of Other Suns,” a piece inspired by the Great Migration.
Shauna Maguire, administrator for the Newport String Project, says in a press release, “This concert showcases two string quartet masterworks. We’re thrilled to present these alongside Imogen Holst’s atmospheric piece and Carlos Simon’s work inspired by a pivotal moment in American history.”
