To the Editor:

In this primary election, Ward 1 voters have three candidates to choose from. While all are excellent individuals, who we elect to replace hard working, vocal and informed Angela Lima, is vital to our city’s future. That’s why I will be voting for Dr. Charlie Pattavina, MD, a retired emergency room doctor and a former medical association president.

Newport’s First Ward faces considerable challenges and significant economic opportunities. With major projects underway and in the pipeline – the redevelopment of the North End, the acquisition of the old naval hospital property, environmental/climate change concerns, needed infrastructure improvements, repurposing of state land freed by the bridge ramp project – Ward 1’s key representative must hit the ground running on day one!

Who we chose will need effective communication, negotiation, consensus-building, budgetary, project-management, analytical skills and a deep commitment to the broad community engagement necessary to solve problems and leverage opportunities. The candidate also needs to have the time and untethered focus to tackle these issues effectively. With decades of medical and management experience, Dr. Pattavina has the credentials and qualities to move our city forward!

Early voting is now open at City Hall during business hours. To find where to vote next Tuesday/10th, visit this site:

Beth Cullen, Newport
