The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will begin a temporary closure of the section of Waterfront Drive at the I-195 overpass in East Providence to demolish the old Washington Bridge deck and beam.

The closure will take effect at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17 and last until 11 a.m. on Monday, September 23, 2024. During the closure, drivers will be detoured from Waterfront Drive to Valley Street. This detour will use a short gravel section.

Demolition activities are only permitted during daytime hours. The remaining demolition activities, including jackhamming, will be completed 24 hours a day with evening hours also being utilized for some demolition work. The evening closures of Gano Street at the I-195 overpass will continue as scheduled on Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. However, jackhammering operations are expected to conclude by mid-week at Gano Street.
