The National Science Foundation has awarded $3.4 million in funding to researchers at the University of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island School of Design for a four-year collaborative research project on climate change mitigation.

The funding, which was announced Thursday, will support research aimed at developing strategies to enhance community resilience to climate change. The project will leverage climate research, education, and workforce development infrastructure to address compounding climate hazards affecting coastal communities, such as flooding and salinization, affecting coastal communities, while increasing scientific literacy and strengthening workforce diversity.

Researchers from the University of Delaware, the University of Rhode Island, and the College of Charleston will also receive funding for the project.

The climate change mitigation project is one of 14 collaborative research projects across 50 institutions in 21 jurisdictions that are funded by the National Science Foundation’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research program. The Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research program funds research projects that are designed to improve the national research infrastructure, research and development, capacity, and competitiveness of the U.S. workforce.

“Climate change research is crucial to developing strategies that combat this pressing threat, and the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island School of Design are among our nation’s cutting-edge institutions leading in this field,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner. “With this federal funding, these universities can continue their work to find solutions that will strength climate resiliency and protect vulnerable populations across Rhode Island from climate change.”
