The Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has announced that the 2025 parade will be dedicated to the memory of Jack Kane, a beloved longtime resident and active community member who passed away on July 19, 2024, at the age of 90.

The committee shared the news on Facebook on Aug. 11, stating, “The 2025 Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is proudly dedicated to Jack Kane, a longtime 5th Warder and active community member. He will be missed by all that knew him and will be long remembered.”

The parade, scheduled for March 15, 2025, will celebrate Kane’s life and significant contributions to the Newport community.

According to his obituary, Kane, a proud Fifth Ward resident for most of his life, was known for his diverse career path and unwavering commitment to public service. He worked at various establishments, including the Casino Tennis Hall of Fame and Gustave White Auctions, before dedicating 25 years to the Newport Fire Department.

During his time as a firefighter, Kane served 15 years as the union president, demonstrating his leadership skills and dedication to his colleagues. His loyalty to his fellow firefighters remained steadfast throughout his life.

Kane’s community involvement extended far beyond his professional life. He was a lifetime member of the Newport Ancient Order of Hibernians, where he was named the 2017 Hibernian of the Year. He also belonged to the AOH Singers and was a lifetime member of the Newport Elks.

As a devout Catholic, Kane was a regular attendee at St. Augustin’s Church, where he also sang in the choir for many years. His passion for music was evident in all aspects of his life, with his home often filled with melodies.

Kane’s love for sports was another defining characteristic. He coached Pop Warner football and St. Augustin CYO basketball, was an avid golfer, and was a longtime member of Green Valley Country Club.

His dedication to the Newport Country Club, where he served as clubhouse manager, earned him lifetime playing privileges in recognition of his service to the club and its members.

Kane’s family life was equally rich. He shared over 67 years of marriage with his late wife, Mary Ellen, who passed away in May 2022. He is survived by six children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-granddaughter.

The 2025 Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, now a tribute to Jack Kane, promises to be a meaningful event, bringing together the community to celebrate the life of a man who dedicated himself to serving and enriching Newport for decades.
