What’sUpNewp is set to interview candidates for Newport’s City Council and School Committee ahead of the September 10 primary and November 5 general election.

The interviews will be 30-minute live virtual video conversations on multiple platforms, including our website, Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube.

The series begins with candidates for Newport’s First Ward, which will see new representation as incumbent Angela Lima is not seeking re-election.

Three candidates are vying to represent Newport’s First Ward. The following is the schedule of interviews;

Hugo DeAscentis on Monday, Aug. 26, from noon to 12:30 pm

Ellen Pinnock on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 10:30 am to 11 am

Charles Pattavina on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 11:30 am to 12 pm

These live, one-on-one virtual video interviews will introduce you to the candidates, allow them to discuss their platforms, and allow us to ask the questions that are important to voters.

The interviews will cover a range of topics, including the city’s biggest problems, candidates’ policy priorities, qualifications for office, and long-term challenges facing Newport.

Specific issues to be addressed include affordability, infrastructure funding, and climate change. Viewers can submit questions live during the broadcasts or in advance via email to ryan@whatsupnewp.com.

Early voting for the primary begins Aug. 21, with general election early voting starting Oct. 16.

Interviews for Second Ward and At-Large Councilor seats, as well as School Committee candidates, will take place between Sept. 30 and Oct. 11.

The full schedule for remaining Newport City Council interviews will be announced soon.
