The Honorable John Kerry, 68th U.S. Secretary of State, will be the keynote speaker for the Forum at Newport 2024, the second annual conference on climate change’s geostrategic and national security challenges and opportunities.

Presented by the Pell Center at Salve Regina University and the U.S. Naval War College, the Forum will be held on September 5, 2024, from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Salve Regina University’s O’Hare academic building at 36 Ochre Point Ave. The public is encouraged to attend.

National security leaders have long recognized that the environment plays a major role in complex scenarios. Decreased rainfall can lead to drought, for example, which, in turn, can lead to hunger and even famine.  When the right mix of triggers is present, these forces can lead to political violence, civil war, and international conflict. At this remarkable half-day conference, a dynamic array of public leaders, scholars, and experts will unpack the direct connection between changes in the Earth’s climate and the national security challenges and opportunities facing the United States of America.

In addition to Kerry, the event will feature U.S. Senator Jack Reed (RI), U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), the honorable Carlos Del Toro, U.S. Secretary of the Navy, Dr. Thomas Barnett, author of America’s New Map, and Sherri Goodman, author of Threat Multiplier

Registration is open.
