The 3rd Annual Sunflower Family Festival in Jamestown, R.I., will honor Ukraine’s Independence Day while marking the end of summer in southern Rhode Island. The event, scheduled for Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., promises a day filled with live music, food, crafts, and activities for all ages.
Held at Lawn School on 55 Lawn Ave., the festival aims to celebrate Ukrainian culture and traditions while raising funds for war-displaced children in Ukraine. Admission is free, with proceeds from a raffle and donations supporting the cause.
The Jamestown Ukraine Relief Project, organizers of the event, have curated a diverse lineup of entertainment and activities. Attendees can look forward to live performances by Ukrainian-American songwriter Olya Fryz and local favorites Matt and Judy Bolles with their group, South County Rounders.
Children and families can participate in sunflower-themed crafts, contests, and various activities throughout the day. The festival’s timing coincides with Ukraine’s Independence Day, adding a layer of significance to the celebrations.
“This festival offers a unique opportunity for our community to come together, enjoy the last days of summer, and show solidarity with Ukraine,” says the Jamestown Ukraine Relief Project. “We’re excited to showcase Ukrainian culture while providing a fun-filled day for families.”
The event has received support from the Rhode Island Foundation, whose generous grant has helped make the festival possible.
As tensions continue in Ukraine, events like the Sunflower Family Festival serve as a reminder of the country’s rich cultural heritage and the global support it receives. The sunflower, Ukraine’s national flower, has become a symbol of resilience and hope, making it a fitting theme for the festival.
The festival’s program is designed to appeal to a wide range of interests. Music lovers can enjoy the eclectic mix of Ukrainian and American folk music, while food enthusiasts can sample a variety of culinary offerings. The craft activities and contests provide interactive experiences for attendees of all ages.
While the festival promises fun and entertainment, it also serves a deeper purpose. By raising funds for war-displaced children in Ukraine, the event connects local community action with international humanitarian efforts. Attendees can enjoy the festivities while knowing their participation contributes to a worthy cause.
The 3rd Annual Sunflower Family Festival stands as a testament to the power of community engagement and international solidarity. As Jamestown prepares to host this vibrant event, it invites residents and visitors alike to join in celebrating Ukrainian culture, supporting a worthy cause, and embracing the spirit of summer one last time.
