Following the Supreme Court’s decision to limit the powers of the former president, Senator Jack Reed issued a statement saying the ruling jeopardizes democracy.
“The Court’s ruling puts the presidency above the law in a way that jeopardizes our democracy,” Reed said. “It makes it easier for a President to abuse the powers of the office with impunity. How can that mean anything other than more corruption with less accountability? It is dangerous for any court to open the door to that behavior.”
Reed went on to say that the American people saw Trump’s alleged abuse of power during the 2020 election, and that Trump’s recent comments about being a dictator are evidence that he will seek retribution against his political opponents.
“Regardless of the aberrant views of this Court, I trust American voters to make up their own minds about his fitness to serve in public office,” Reed said.
