The Newport City Council is set to tackle a packed agenda at its upcoming meeting on July 24, 2024, with proposed zoning amendments and the establishment of a tourism improvement district taking center stage.

The meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 43 Broadway, will feature public hearings on several key issues affecting the city’s development and tourism sectors.

Topping the agenda are 10 proposed zoning amendments, covering various residential districts from R-3 to R-160. These amendments, continued from the July 10 meeting, will receive their first reading before the council.

The proposed changes aim to update and refine Newport’s zoning regulations, potentially impacting future development and land use across the city. Residents and stakeholders will have the opportunity to voice their opinions during the public hearing.

Another significant item on the docket is the proposed establishment of the Newport Tourism Improvement District. This initiative could reshape how the city manages and promotes its vital tourism industry.

The council will also consider a resolution requesting the city administration to draft an ordinance establishing 12-hour resident sticker parking on certain streets. Councilor David Carlin is spearheading this effort, which could affect parking regulations for residents and visitors alike.

In addition to these major items, the council will address a variety of routine matters through its consent calendar. These include approvals for special events, license renewals, and communications from community organizations.

Notable events seeking approval include the 7th Annual “Cardines Classic” Army-Navy Baseball game on Sept. 20, the Italian Heritage Parade on Oct. 14, and the 33rd Annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival on Oct. 19 and 20.

The council will also consider several ordinance amendments in their second reading, covering topics such as subdivision regulations, sign regulations, and parking standards.

An update on the North End Progress from Colin Kane, Chair of the Ad Hoc Bridge Realignment Property Advisory Commission, is also on the agenda, highlighting ongoing development efforts in that area of the city.

The City Manager is expected to provide an update on traffic safety, addressing concerns about road conditions and pedestrian safety in Newport.

The meeting will conclude with the council convening as the Board of License Commissioners to consider liquor license applications for upcoming events, including the Newport International Boat Show in September.

This comprehensive agenda reflects the diverse range of issues facing Newport as it balances preservation, development, and tourism interests. The outcomes of these discussions could have far-reaching impacts on the city’s future landscape and economy.

Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting or follow the proceedings online to stay informed about these important local matters. The council’s decisions on zoning, tourism, and infrastructure will shape Newport’s trajectory in the coming years, making this a crucial meeting for all stakeholders in the city’s future.
