The state of Rhode Island has received a significant boost to its efforts to bolster biomedical research. A $21 million federal grant has been awarded to the Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (RI-INBRE) to support the training of the next generation of medical professionals.
The grant was awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and will be spent over a period of five years. The funds will be used to help researchers at several academic institutions across the state acquire new equipment and expand training programs.
The RI-INBRE Network of Biomedical Research Excellence was established in 2001 and has been funded by the NIH ever since. The network brings together researchers from colleges and universities across Rhode Island to collaborate on biomedical research projects.
“Renewing this grant for another five years is great news for Rhode Island and great news for our researchers and scientists, who are advancing medical breakthroughs and developing new treatment options that help prevent and treat diseases like diabetes and rare forms of cancers,” said Senator Jack Reed, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, who has been a longtime champion of RI-INBRE.
“This federal funding will help usher in new, innovative medical research projects while providing the tools needed to train the next generation of biomedical professionals right here in the Ocean State.”
