The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is getting ready to open the final leg of the roundabout near the Henderson Bridge as part of the project to replace the aging structure.

The work is scheduled to be completed on Friday, May 31, before the evening rush hour, according to RIDOT. This will connect North Broadway to the old Henderson Expressway. Construction on the project is expected to continue through 2024. The old bridge is being demolished as part of the project.

The new bridge, built by RIDOT, opened in November 2023, replacing an earlier structure that had been deemed structurally deficient and required constant repairs. The new bridge is smaller than the old one, and has a lower seating that makes it more accessible to drivers. The connecting roadway on the old bridge was also demolished and a new one built to replace it.

The Henderson Bridge project is part of RIDOT’s ongoing efforts to repair bridges that are considered to be structurally deficient. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2025.
