According to a victualing license filed with the City of Newport, Caliente Mexican Grill will soon replace 12 Metre Cafe at 462 Thames Street in Newport.

The victualing application will be considered by Newport City Council members during their Regular Council Meeting on Wednesday, May 22.

Gary’s Handy Lunch operated at 462 Thames Street for over fifty years before closing on February 12, 2023. 12 Metre Cafe moved from Seamen’s Church Institute and opened in that location shortly thereafter.

12 Metre Cafe hasn’t posted anything about the closure or plans on its website or social media pages. A request for comment has gone unanswered.

Caliente Mexican Grill operated six other locations: three in Providence, one at the University of Rhode Island in South Kingstown, one in West Warwick, and one in Malden, Massachusetts.

According to their website, “Caliente Mexican Grill was created in 2005 with one goal in mind: To serve New England with the freshest burritos and tacos around”.
