The following road and lane closure notices have been scheduled by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA).

All schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

April 7 – 13, 2024

Newport Claiborne Pell Bridge
Upcoming improvements in the roadway between the old toll plaza and the bridge which are set to begin October 16, 2023, and continue through April 2024, will impact travel times for those crossing the Newport Pell Bridge. Eastbound Right Lane Closure- 4/8- 9 am to 2 pm
Eastbound Right Lane Closure- 4/9- 9 am to 3 pm

Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge
There are currently no lane closures planned for the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge.

Route 138 Connector
Overnight:
Removal of sign gantry at approach to toll plaza beginning 4/8 at 8pm through 4/9 at 4am will include several 5-minute traffic stoppages between 10pm and midnight.

Mount Hope Bridge
Upcoming cable air flow testing, part of the Mount Hope Bridge Dehumidification project, will require the bridge to be restricted to a single lane between 9am and 3pm Monday through Thursday, and 9am to 1pm on Fridays from March 11th through May 17th.

Sakonnet River Bridge
There are currently no lane closures planned for the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Interstate Highway Restrictions

 I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to clearly guide motorists to their destinations.  

Providence: 
I-95 North at Exit 37 B,C,D interchange, expect various off-ramp closures for pile driving operations as necessary, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: 
I-95, from Exit 37A to Exit 39A, alternating lane closures for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

Providence: 
Ashburton St. South, from Corliss St. to Charles St., alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Providence: Charles St. North, from Randall St. to Corliss St., alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

 Washington Bridge, East Providence/Providence

East Providence/Providence: Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence are open. This temporary traffic pattern allows two lanes of travel westbound and two lanes of travel eastbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence/Providence: I-195, from Broadway to South Main St., right lane closures possible for construction, Fri. night (April 5), and alternating lane closures possible for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights, 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

 Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work through late 2024.

 Cranston: I-295 North, from Rte. 37 to Phenix Ave., alternating lane closures for guardrail installation, Mon. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

 Cranston: I-95, from Rte. 10 to Elmwood Ave, two left or two right lanes closed to stripe and add delineators, Mon.-Wed. nights, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

 Hopkinton: 
I-95 South, from Exit 1 to the Connecticut line, alternating lane closures for pavement improvements, Sun. – Fri. (April 12) nights, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m.

 Pawtucket: 
I-95 North, from Exit 43 to Massachusetts line, alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Thurs. night, 9 p.m. – 4 a.m.

 Providence: 
I-195 West, from Exit 1C to I-95 South, alternating lane closure for a bridge inspection, Thurs. night, 9 p.m. – 4 a.m.

 Providence: 
I-95 North, from Exit 35 to Exit 37A, alternating lane closure for a bridge inspection, Wed. night, 9 p.m. – 4 a.m.

 Smithfield: I-295 North, from Exit 12A to Exit 12B, & I-295 South from Exit 12B to Exit 12A, alternating lane closures bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Weekday

 Cumberland: I-295 South, at the on and off-ramps at Mendon Rd. (Rte. 122), ramp narrowing with frequent vehicle access in/out of the work zone for drainage work, Mon. and Tues., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

 Warwick/West Warwick: I-295 at Providence St. bridge, alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.


Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

  Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

Lincoln: Starting Friday night, April 5 at 10 p.m., through the fall, the on-ramp from Rte. 146 South to I-295 North will be closed. Follow signed detour.

Lincoln: 
I-295 North, at Exit 18B (Rte. 146 North), temporary exit closure for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: 
I-295 North, from Exit 18A to Exit 18B, alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

North Smithfield: 
Rte. 146 at Sayles Hill Rd., left turn-lane closure for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: 
Rte. 146A South at the Spring Brook bridge, road closed for sign demolition, Mon. and Tues. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: Travel lanes have shifted at the Rte. 146/Rte. 146A (Exit 10) interchange, with the following changes:

  • Rte. 146 North: both travel lanes have shifted to the right
  • Rte. 146 North, at Exit 10 (Rte. 146A): ramp narrows at the exit from two lanes to one
  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

   Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick)

Cranston:  I-295 North, at Rte. 37, periodic left lane, road and exit closures of Exit 1B off Rte. 37 East to I-295 North for steel beam placement, Sun. and Mon. nights (April 14 and 15), 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Please follow signed detours.

Cranston: 
I-295, at Rte. 37, use caution for vehicles working in and out of work zone for steel beam delivery, Tues. and Wed. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Cranston: 
I-295 North, from Rte. 37 to Phenix Ave., alternating lane closures for guardrail replacement, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Cranston: Cranston St., between Sherman Ave. & Overbrook Dr., alternating one-way traffic with frequent vehicle access in/out of the work zone for bridge construction, Mon. – Fri., 6:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

  6/10 Interchange Project (Providence)

Route 10

  • Rte. 10 South, at Union Ave., alternating lane closures for drainage work, Thurs. night, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.
  • Rte. 10 South, all lanes shift to the left near the Broadway overpass.
  • Westminster Street off-ramp is temporarily closed.

Route 6

  • Rte. 6 West, from the 6/10 split to the Hartford Ave. off-ramp, alternating lane closures for striping, Tues. & Wed. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

6/10 Connector

  • On the Connector outbound a new lane split is in place for Rte. 10 South and Rte. 6 West, several hundred feet south of its previous location. Lanes are narrow.

Affected City Streets

  • The Tobey St. and Harris Ave. on-ramps are closed. Follow signed detours.
  • Traffic shifted on the Broadway and Westminster St. bridges over the highway.
  • Westminster St. on-ramp to Rte. 10 South is closed. Follow signed detour.

Project-wide

  • Periodic one-lane closures possible along Rte. 10 and Rte. 6 on off-peak hours, Mon. – Fri.

Temporary Ramp Closures

 Lincoln: The on-ramps from Breakneck Hill Rd. to Rte. 146 remain closed for bridge work until further notice. Follow signed detour.

New Traffic Pattern

 Providence: Effective Mon. April 8, all traffic on Rte. 146 South under the Hawkins St. Bridge will shift to the left through early May, then to the right until the end of June.

Overnight

 Providence: Rte. 146 North and South at the Hawkins St. Bridge overpass, alternating lane closures with narrowed lanes and frequent vehicle access in/out of the work zone for striping and barrier placement, Fri. (April 5) and Sun. (April 7) nights, 10 p.m.- 5 a.m. Effective Mon. morning (April 8) traffic will shift to the left through early May, then to the right until the end of June.

Weekday

 Providence: Rte. 10, at the Atwells Ave. overpass, partial right lane closures for drainage improvements, Mon.-Wed., 8 a.m.-4 p.m.


Metropolitan Providence

Henderson Bridge

East Providence: Henderson Pkwy. West, at the off-ramp to Massasoit, ramp closed for construction. Follow signed detour.

Temporary Bridge Closure

Johnston/North Providence: The Greystone Sluiceway Bridge on Greystone Ave. over the Woonasquatucket River, between Riverside Ave. in Johnston and Rte. 104 (Waterman Ave.) in North Providence, is closed. Follow signed detour using Waterman Ave. and Rte. 44 (Putnam Pke.)

Weekday

East Providence: Waterman Ave. at North Broadway, motorists should expect narrowed lanes for gas line repairs, Tues., 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

 Johnston: 
Rte. 5, from Charlie’s Way to Sunday Rose Ct., alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Thurs., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

 North Providence: 
Rte. 7, from Wescott Ln. to Douglas Ave., alternating one-way traffic for gas main installation, Mon., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

 Pawtucket: 
Rte. 15, from Roosevelt Ave. to Exchange Ct., right lane closure for a bridge inspection, Thurs., 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Continuing

East Bay

East Bay Bike Path Bridges

 Barrington/Warren: Rte. 114, at the Barrington and Warren Bridges, the northbound boardwalks will remain open during demolition and construction of the bike path bridges, providing a continuous off-road path around the construction area.


Newport County

 Newport Pell Bridge Approaches – Phase II

Newport: Starting Friday night, April 5 at 5 p.m. through Monday morning, April 8 at 7 a.m., extended weekend left lane closures are scheduled on both Route 138 East and West, between the Pell Bridge and JT Connell Highway overpass, to replace the center median.

Newport: JT Connell Hwy., right lane closure from the Rte. 138 underpass to Van Zandt Ave., and left lane closures at the rotary, for electrical work, Tues. night, 8 p.m. – 4 a.m.

Newport: 
JT Connell Highway, from the Rte. 138 underpass to Van Zandt Ave., right lane closure for sidewalk work, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Newport: 
Van Zandt Ave. at JT Connell Connector, shoulder closures for traffic signal work, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
