The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has opened the Great Swamp Shooting Range in South Kingstown for the 2024 season.
The public shooting range is located within the Great Swamp Management Area and is open for 7 days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The range is free to use, however all visitors must obtain a range permit prior to accessing the property.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) says in a press release that it is committed to providing safe and environmentally friendly opportunities for all outdoor activities. The Great Swamp Shooting Range has undergone several renovations since it opened in 1976, including a $2.1 million renovation in 2018 that aimed to improve safety measures while increasing accessibility and opportunities for participants.
The range offers a variety of shooting opportunities for hunters, target shooters and paper target shooters. The DEM hopes the range will promote safe shooting practices and allow hunters and target shooters to practice their skills and safely hunt for game.
“Our range supports the DEM Hunter Safety Education Program, which instructs hunters and sport shooters in the safe storage, transport, handling, and shooting of firearms and archery equipment,” said Division of Fish and Wildlife Chief Phil Edwards. “Shooting accuracy and practice are critically important for ethical hunting and humane take of legally hunted game. Sighting in firearms, adjusting scopes, and simply practicing with targets are important and necessary steps to prepare for hunting.”
