Scales & Shells announced on Tuesday, March 19 that they are welcoming a new chef.

“We are excited to announce Richard Allaire as the new chef of Scales & Shells restaurant! Richard Allaire is a Rhode Island Native who has many years of experience working with locally sourced seafood and produce,” Scales & Shells shared on their Facebook Page.

“He is currently the chef and owner of Metacom Kitchen, a casual dining restaurant which opened in Warren in 2014. Prior to Metacom, he assisted in the development of the very popular Providence Coal Fired Pizza concept located in downtown Providence”.

Allaire announced last week that he would close Metacom Kitchen in April.

Allaire formerly helmed the kitchen at Tucker’s Bistro in Newport, L’Epicurio at the Hotel Providence, and Alba in Quincy. His earlier experiences included working for Pascal Leffray at Chez Pascal and Michael Schlow.

On May 16, 2022, former owners Debra & Andy Ackerman announced that they had entered into an agreement to sell Scales & Shells Restaurant to Nautilus Restaurant LLC/Peregrine Group. Peregrine Group also owns Hammetts Hotel in Newport.

Scales & Shells announced on February 17, 2024, that they have partnered with Crisp Restaurant Group.

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with Crisp Restaurant Group! Crisp is a locally owned restaurant company that will be bringing years of restaurant experience to Scales & Shells. One of the owners is a Newport resident understanding the importance of the Scales legacy. Rest assured our wonderful staff and local seafood will remain the same upon reopening. There will also be some exciting new additions to the menu along with our list of beloved classics! We look forward to seeing you May 1st!

Scales & Shells will reopen for the 2024 season on May 1, according to their website.
