The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will be closing the Providence Street Bridge over I-295 in West Warwick for bridge work. The two closures, scheduled for 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., will take place on Monday, April 1, and Tuesday, April 2. The closures will allow RIDOT to install supports under the bridge to prepare for the demolition of the center pier.

During the closures, motorists will be detoured from Providence Street to Route 2, East Avenue, and River Street to connect New London Avenue and Providence Street.

In order to demolish the old bridge and move the new one into its place, an extended weekend closure in the late summer of 2025 has been scheduled. The entire project is expected to be completed in spring 2025. RIDOT will be using an accelerated bridge construction method for this project.

The funding for the project is coming from RhodeWorks and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
