Newport’s Rogers High School has among the highest percentage of poor students in Rhode Island, and it is reflected in test scores.
It is also reflected in high levels of absenteeism, something schools statewide are trying to resolve, including Newport. Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain joins WUN tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. for our live virtual video conversation where we will explore those and other issues.
We will also be looking for updates on the budget, Rogers High School construction, and how the schools are dealing with the construction deficit. A reader asks about the plans for track and field at the New Rogers, when it will be available for use.
As we approach the end of the school year, we will want to know how well the school system has been able to make up for lost learning during the pandemic,
High on the school system’s priorities is its development of a new strategic plan. In her newsletter, Jermain says “spring is … about possibilities, and that is why we are so excited about our new strategic plan. A plan that will help guide us to improved student success ad a stronger school system.”
She says the four key principles of the strategic plan are:
- Champion rigorous and equitable instruction.
- Cultivate a safe and inclusive culture.
- Strengthen family and community partnerships.
- Forge district wide coherence (decision-making, curriculum implementation, etc.).
We will explore the strategic planning process, and how the plan itself will shape the system’s vision for its future.
