Drivers traveling on the Newport Pell Bridge will want to prepare for lane shifts next week as the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority has announced upcoming changes to the traffic pattern at the Newport Pell Bridge plaza.
Between March 5 and March 7, single lanes of traffic will be shifted from the westbound side of the plaza to the eastbound side. The work zone spans several days and the lane shifts will be done one at a time.
“The improvements at the Newport Pell Bridge plaza are on schedule, and the next phase requires lane shifts,” said Lori Caron Silveira, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. “We wanted to give motorists a ‘heads up’ so that the lane changes would have minimal impact on the flow of traffic through the work zone.”
The shifts are part of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority’s plan to rehabilitate a single-span approach bridge structure and bring the highway up to current design standards. The project also includes the installation of a new toll gantry and the demolition of the current toll plaza.
