The Rhode Island Foundation has announced that they are taking applications for $5,000 grants for travel and discovery. The grants are being made available through the Michael P. Metcalf Memorial Fund.

The fund has awarded over 100 students in the past to travel to different parts of the world. Past recipients have gone to Appalachia, Zaire, and even Costa Rica. Emily Gray received a $5,000 grant in 2022 to travel to Ireland to explore the intersection of Irish pagan deities and the Catholic church. She wanted to visit extended family in Ireland as well.

The Rhode Island Foundation aims to broaden student perspectives and enhance personal growth through these travel and discovery opportunities. The grants are available for both domestic and foreign travel, as well as internships and public service programs. Students must be legal residents of Rhode Island in order to apply.

Applications must include a clear description of the proposed activities, a thorough description of the proposed activities, and a clear demonstration of financial need. Projects must also show financial need.

The application period is open now through Feb. 20, 2024. Click here to apply.
