Students at Scituate Middle School were treated to a pre-Thanksgiving performance with the Newport Jazz Assembly Band on Tuesday November 26th. The ensemble clicked on all cylinders with students, many of whom have had only minimal exposure to jazz, often cited as “America’s original art form.”

The band presented a top-notch performance and led a discussion of jazz music in America. Students were able to question the performers about the various styles and historical eras of the genre. One student noted happily, “that was really cool, and we got out of class!”

The Newport Jazz Assembly band was created to bring the music of the Newport Jazz Festival to students in elementary through high school. The group has traveled to public schools in RI, CT and MA. The ensemble includes Ben Marcoux, Joshua Bruneau, Jimmy O’Connell, Tony Davis, Keith Brown, Alex Tremblay and Mike Camacho.
