Big box-stores get Black Friday, online retailers get Cyber Monday, but as the holiday season rolls around, how will small businesses compete? This November 30th is the 10th Annual Small Business Saturday, a national event showcasing the honest and unique visions of small, community-oriented businesses. The Newport Gallery Organization is working with Shop Small to show Newport’s art galleries, working studios and museums some love!

Various galleries around Newport and Middletown have unique, handmade, art-related items on display. These perfectly gift-able pieces support local artists and help the Newport art scene to thrive. Studies show that for every dollar spent at a small business, 67 cents stay within the local economy and help it to flourish! When shopping for gifts this holiday season, when you shop small and shop art, everyone wins!

Devoted Newporters will want to attend a book signing and Small Business Saturday sale at Onne van der Wal Gallery, as van der Wal unveils his new book Sailing America. A stunning photographic celebration of American sailing, and the closest you’ll get on land to the feeling of being on deck, this deluxe, grand-scale book is a voyage across America, capturing the joy, excitement, and serenity of sailing in the waters of every region of the United States—through the eyes of a true master of both sail and lens.

Over at Spring Bull Studio & Gallery, bigger isn’t always better! Small artistic treasures are on display for their 28th Annual Les Petites Oeuvres Exhibition. These pieces in oil, watercolor, pastel, sculpture, and other media are perfect gifts for the art enthusiast in your life with the added benefit of supporting local artists!

With such a wide range of artwork available for sale, there certainly is something for everyone at the Newport galleries this Small Business Saturday, and you can rest assured that your support will allow local artisans to continue doing the work they do for years to come!
