Island Moving Company (IMC) announced this week that community philanthropist and lifelong arts advocate Rodrick B. O’Hanley will be named as their second annual IMC Encore Award recipient on Thursday, September 26 at Greenvale Vineyards.

The award recognizes an individual’s exceptional commitment to the arts on Aquidneck Island, and is presented annually by Island Moving Company to gratefully acknowledge aa community leader for his/her outstanding commitment to, and support of the arts.

In addition to Mr. O’Hanley’s  eight years of board service from 1992-1999, chairing IMC’s education committee, his work to create and implement in 1993–a one-of-a kind Dance Residency Program with Island Moving Company in the Middletown Schools, not only established IMC’s educational programs as a leader in the space of Arts-Learning, he also helped to create a model for IMC to be emulated across Rhode Island Public Schools.

In addition to Rod’s tenure at IMC, he was also significantly involved in various other committees and boards, including the Collections Committee of the Redwood Library, Panelist for the RI State Arts Council, long-standing trustee and former board chair of the Newport Art Museum and a life-member of the National Association of State Art & Music Teachers.

Mr. O’Hanley’s professional life is as equally rich and varied as is his community and volunteer work. He worked as designer for over seven years with Ron Alose Design Group, served as Art Instructor to the Middletown Public Schools and Community College of RI, was elected acting chair of Save Regina University’s Arts Education Department, also the Director of Art & Music with Middletown Public Schools, one of the only such positions in Rhode Island.  Rod worked diligently to see that all art forms were represented in school’s arts programs, from Visual Arts to Performing Arts, and was especially instrumental in including dance.

Following the brief speaking program and awards ceremony, guests will receive a sneak-preview of an excerpt from Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen’s newest Ballet, that will be premiered as part of the company’s fall repertory performance entitled “The Nature of Light” to be presented at the Congregational Church, October 17-19.

The 2019 Encore Award Reception is being presented thanks to the generosity of Nancy Parker Wilson at Greenvale Vineyard’s Tasting Room, 582 Wapping Road, Portsmouth, RI from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, September 26.  Tickets for the reception are $50.00 per person and are available online at www.islandmovingco.org or by calling the office at (401) 847-4470.  Wine and Light Fare will be served.
