Newport Gulls are playoff bound

The New England Collegiate Baseball League’s most successful franchise finds themselves in the playoffs once again. Having missed the postseason each of the past two seasons, the Newport Gulls have solidified the #2 Seed in the Southern Division. Currently sitting just one game behind the #1 Seed Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (27-16), the Gulls hold a 26-17 record and will host the Mystic Schooners (22-20) in a win or go home scenario this Saturday, August 3. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM and gates open at 5:00 PM. The Gulls take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats in the last regular season game on August 1 and does not affect playoff positioning. Newport will have the day off on Friday, August 2 to prepare for the postseason.

Changed prior to the 2017 Season, the NECBL Playoff Format now features three teams from the Northern and Southern Division in which the #1 seed receives a bye and place in Division Championship while the #2 seed hosts the #3 seed in a one-game playoff. The winner of the #3 vs. #2 game plays the #1 seed in a three-game series for the Division Championship. Winners of the Division Championships compete for the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup in a three-game series against the winner of the opposite division. A schedule past Saturday’s game at Cardines Field is TBD.

Newport Gulls Field Manager Kevin Winterrowd is excited for his players and the opportunity to win a championship: “Our players have been grinding hard all summer and deserve the chance to keep competing for a title. It’s been a special group of guys to work with and in a one-game scenario- it will be all hands on deck but we’re ready.”
