Are you ready? This week marks the biggest event of the month with the 63rd Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 16th. It steps off from Newport City Hall promptly at 11:00 am. Prognosticators are predicting warmer weather than we’ve had the past two weeks. Dress appropriately, but don’t miss this citywide parade and celebration.
As you may already know, March is Newport Irish Heritage Month! Throughout this month – March 1-31 – we celebrate traditional Irish music and dance, food, history tours, lectures, and many more activities throughout our city.
This week EVERYONE is Irish, so join in.
It’s not too late to add some green to your wardrobe – scarves, ties, hats, buttons and pins. Be sure to mention Irish Heritage Month to your guests. It’s one more reason for everyone to make Newport a destination city in March.

TOUR GUIDES TIP OF THE WEEK: ENCOURAGE & PRAISE YOUR COLLEAGUES
One of the most effective strategies for improving the atmosphere and morale at your tourist site, historic mansion, or museum property is to encourage and praise the people who work alongside you. Everyone deserves positive reinforcement, and everyone needs to hear words of encouragement about their work. You may not be the manager or the director of your business, but you can still play an important role and recognize the good work being done by those you work with. It’s not hard to do and it should become a part of your daily routine.
The best way to accomplish this is by first being aware of the efforts being made by your fellow associates to serve clients. Watch what each one does well. Watch to see how they handle problems or challengers with guests. Listen to how they answer questions and respond to guest inquiries. Then, when you see or hear a good or great performance, speak up and give them some positive feedback. You will be amazed at the response your effort will produce.
BOTTOM LINE: Make it a daily habit to catch someone doing something right, doing something well, and providing outstanding guest/client service, and TELL THEM! You will boost their spirits, likely elicit a smile, and improve the overall morale in your workplace.

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, daughter of Alice & Cornelius Vanderbilt II, is best known as an art patron and founder of New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art. She also had a significant career as a sculptor, exhibiting throughout the United States and Europe and receiving major commissions and prizes. In 2016, Operation Stand Down Rhode Island (OSDRI) launched the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial with the widely acclaimed and dramatic display of nearly 7,000 military boots. Each boot is adorned with a name placard and an American flag representing each American service member killed in action in the Global War on Terror. The International 12 Metre Class’ 2019 World Championship will be held in Newport, Rhode Island (USA) from July 8- 13, hosted by the Ida Lewis Yacht Club and the 12 Metre Yacht Club. It will be the largest-ever gathering of 12 Metre yachts in the United States featuring more than two-dozen boats from seven countries.
