Senator Dawn Euer sent out an update on the National Grid outage to her constituent email list on Wednesday morning and asked that we share it with our readers.
National Grid update
As you may know, Newport is dealing with a major natural gas outage. Please do not stay in your homes without heat. There are shelters and warming centers open. I’ll provide additional information below, however, follow the National Grid website and the City of Newport’s Facebook page for ongoing updates.

If you are a National Grid customer and haven’t received emails or phone calls, you can update your contact information by calling their customer service number 1(800) 322-3223.
Additionally, National Grid will reimburse folks for hotel rooms, meals, and other reasonable expenses. If you can’t afford to pay and wait to be reimbursed, National Grid has representatives at Gurney’s Resort (1 Goat Island, Newport) and Gaudet Middle School (1113 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown) who can provide affected persons with gift cards and/or vouchers for food and a hotel room.
Throughout this week, breakfast (7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.) and lunch (11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) will be served at the Florence Gray Community Center, 1 York Street in Newport, for anyone impacted by the outage.
For families who participate in Newport’s Food Backpack program, backpacks will be available from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Pell Elementary, 35 Dexter Street, Newport. For families who are not enrolled in the program, food backpacks will be available from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Pell.
Local senior meal sites, Edward King House and Middletown Senior Center, remain open. And Meals On Wheels deliveries will continue throughout the week.
Also, Gurneys has stated that they will be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
