There may be snow by the time you read this, but this is still a good time to re-visit Newport and Aquidneck Island by car. It’s a quiet time on the island, and the traffic is but a memory of the summer past. Of course, there are so many neat places to explore!
Before you go, pick up a copy of Betty Ann Czech’s “Driving & Walking Tour Map & Guide” and take the ten-mile Ocean Drive to see the mansions, the landscapes, and to marvel at the Atlantic Ocean breaking along the shoreline. This handy guide will help you identify the many parks, homes, and historical sites along the way. You can also drive into Fort Adams State Park and take in the views of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay from there. On your return, go slow along Bellevue Avenue [more gorgeous mansions], and slip over the hill down Touro Street and into Washington Square. There’s history everywhere around you. Finally, drive back out onto America’s Cup and head west over the causeway to Goat Island for more spectacular views of the bay and harbor.
Enjoy this respite as Winter comes on strong and the cold lingers. But do not despair. There are less than two months till Spring arrives. Enjoy!
NOTABLE THIS WEEK
The Welcome Center at the Breakers re-opened this week after being closed due to the gas line cut off on Monday a week ago that left more than 7,000 Newport County customers without natural gas for their heating and cooking needs.
Rosecliff also re-opened earlier this week following clean-up from a water line break inside the house leaving some slight water damage on the first-floor that was quickly attended to. The mansion is now open on its regular Winter schedule: Daily, 9am – 5pm.
REMINDERS

BILL CUNNINGHAM: FACADES, the newest exbibit at Rosecliff, opened on Sunday, December 2nd. Celebrating the creative intersection of fashion and architecture through the lens of a visionary photographer, this exhibition explores Cunningham’s self-created project, begun in 1969, documenting the architectural riches and fashion history of New York City. Here he captures Manhattan’s Egyptian temples and Russian cathedrals, Beaux-Arts mansions, Gothic Revival churches, art deco office buildings, and high Victorian department stores. Bill Cunningham found antique clothes in New York’s thrift shops, street fairs and auctions, and dressed Editta Sherman, “the Duchess of Carnegie Hall,” in his fashion finds, posing her in front of a wide variety of these Manhattan sites. ABOUT THIS PROGRAM: During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the heyday of America’s last great wave of immigration, the American public and its elected representatives debated which immigrants were fit for entry and which were considered “undesirable.” Immigration officials were then tasked with inspecting these immigrants and deciding who would be allowed to enter the country and who would be deported back home. Ellis Island, which then processed 75 percent of immigrants to the country, became the focal point for that debate. Today, Ellis Island’s story provides an important historical precedent regarding how Americans approached the question of immigration a century ago, and perhaps can provide timely lessons to consider during the current immigration crisis.
