The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) announced this morning that the 24 hours per day westbound extended lane closure which began on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, has been changed.
Originally, traffic was reduced to a single lane westbound for approximately 1,000 feet on the Newport side of the bridge and was scheduled to stay in place from Monday, November 26th at 4:00 am until Thursday, November 29that 2:00 PM. The hours for the westbound closure have been amended to exclude evening rush hours from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Both westbound lanes will be open to traffic for the remaining dates of Wednesday, November 28, 2018 through Friday, November 30, 2018 from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm to accommodateour evening commuters.
“RITBA sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused during Tuesday evening’s rush hour,” a press release making the announcement stated.
The work involves completing the final stage of the concrete safety walk renovations on the north side of the bridge. This work has been ongoing during the 2018 construction season and involved the demolition of the original walkway, the repair of the existing rebar embedded in the concrete, and the pouring of a new concrete walkway.
