Newport, RI – Newport Fire Department responded to a 37 Powel Avenue in Newport around 3 pm on Sunday afternoon, upon arrival Newport Fire Department reported a working fire. Newport Fire Department and mutual aid from Jamestown, Middletown, Newport Navy, and North Kingstown were on the scene of the multi-alarm house fire (which was detected first through the smoke alarms installed in the premises) that took hours to fight on Sunday.

As of 8 pm, firefighters were on the scene of the fire. WPRI reports a total of seven people were inside the house when the fire started but all of them got out safely. While no occupants were injured, one Newport firefighter was taken to Newport Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.
