Parking Meter newport

The paid parking season in Newport won’t be extended by two months, hours of parking meters operating won’t be extended for three hours, and rates won’t be changing…at least for now.

At Wednesday night’s Newport City Council meeting, Newport City Council was expected to receive four communications from the City Manager that had to do with parking season and parking meters in The-City-By-The-Sea.

Proposed Changes

  1. Paid parking season for Mary Street parking lot would be extended to operate from March 1 – October 31 (right now it is May 1 – October 31). More Info
  2. Meters would operate from 9 am to 12 am (right now it is 9 am to 9 pm) for Washington Square, Touro Street, Touro Court, Market Square, Thames Street, and Memorial Blvd from Thames Street to Bellevue Avenue. More Info
  3. The season for payment at parking meters would be extended from May 1 – October 31, to March 1 – October 31. More Info
  4. Establish that the fee for the maximum parking time shall not exceed two dollars per hours at downtown meters. Establish that the fee for the maximum parking time shall not exceed three dollars per hour for meters located on Memorial Blvd. at Easton’s Beach.
  5. The maximum allowable parking time on Washington Street would be increased to 6 hours versus the current 3 hours. More Info

When the bills were introduced, Mayor Harry Winthrop asked the council to table the four communications, at the recommendation of the City Manager.

Councilor Jamie Bova briefly spoke and indicated that there had been much angst in the community about the proposed and possible changes to parking in Newport and that the communications were being tabled and that a workshop was likely.
