Angela McCalla announced today in a press release that she is running for Newport City Council, representing Ward 1. The Ward 1 seat is currently held by City Councilor Susan Taylor.
Susan Taylor told What’sUpNewp on Sunday that she would “let you (us) know as soon as I have decided” regarding re-election. Another candidate, James Dring, filed his declaration of candidacy for Ward 1 on Monday.
According to the press release, Angela lives in Newport with her wife, Allyson, and son, Ezra. In her position as Recruiter/Trainer for Child & Family, she works to find and support foster families throughout Rhode Island.
“As a wife, mother, and professional, I know that the success of our community depends on access to quality public education and job opportunities,” said McCalla in the press release provided. “The highlight of my career has been working to empower children and families and help them identify solutions to the challenges they’re facing.”
McCalla has 15 years of experience working with local nonprofits, including East Bay Community Action Program and Newport County Mental Health, according to the press release provided by McCalla. It goes on to say that she is currently a Board Member for Lucy’s Hearth, Sankofa Community Connection, the North End Neighborhood Association, and serves on the Parent Advisory Council with the Newport Public Schools.
McCalla remarked in the release: “I’ve dedicated my life to helping others and conducting public service through nonprofits. Serving on the Newport City Council will allow me to continue that service and focus on important issues facing the families in our city. I look forward to the campaign and the opportunity to talk about my ideas to move our city forward.”
